VAIL, CO – This weekend marked the 77th Anniversary of the battle of Riva Ridge. It was a pivotal battle within the northern Apennine Mountains of Italy throughout World Warfare II for the members of the tenth Mountain Division, the Army’s winter warfare unit that skilled at Camp Hale, which is south of what’s now Vail Mountain.
Troopers and Leaders from tenth Mountain Division, 4th Infantry Division, Colorado Nationwide Guard, and the nineteenth Special Forces Group, Airborne honoring those that served in the course of the Battle of Riva Ridge Ski Descent this weekend. It was filled with informative talks, a parade, and ski occasions.
BACKGROUND:
On the night of February 18, 1945, in northern Italy, the 86th Infantry made a daring evening climb and efficiently assaulted Riva Ridge. The assault utilized 5 rigorously ready climbing routes, together with two that required fastened ropes. By dawn, the mountaineers had taken Riva Ridge. Nevertheless, ferocious counterattacks instantly jeopardized the achievement; not till February 25 was your entire ridge secured.
