Japan to deploy missile unit on island close to Taiwan

Japan’s Protection Ministry plans to deploy a surface-to-air guided missile unit on Yonaguni, a distant island in southwestern Japan that’s about 110 kilometers from Taiwan, ministry spokesman Takeshi Aoki stated Tuesday.

Particularly, the ministry is ready to increase the Floor Self-Protection Power’s Camp Yonaguni, which is a part of Okinawa Prefecture, to accommodate the unit, the spokesman stated.

The deployment is meant to strengthen the protection of the Nansei Islands, together with Yonaguni, as China boosts its army strain on Taiwan, sources aware of the matter stated.
