The ship is called for Medal of Honor Recipient Marine Corps Sergeant Main (Retired) John L. Canley.

Canley was awarded the nation’s highest honor 50 years after his actions serving as Firm Gunnery Sergeant, Firm A, First Battalion, First Marines, First Marine Division within the Republic of Vietnam through the Battle of Hue Metropolis.
