William Bee was a Marine infantryman on his fourth deployment. This time he discovered himself in Garmsir, Afghanistan as a part of the troop surge despatched in to quell Taliban violence. Throughout the assault on Garmsir, Bee’s platoon had Reuters photographer Goran Tomasevic assigned to them to cowl the motion.

Tomasevic was making an attempt out a brand new lens when a shot rang out. Bee ran to the mud wall surrounding their patrol base and, as he raised his rifle to sight in on motion lower than 100 yards away, one other shot rang out from a Taliban rifle. On the identical time, Tomasevic’s digital camera shutter clicked as he captured probably the most iconic photographs from the battle in Afghanistan.
