UK and Spanish PM Maintain Gibraltar Border Talks 07.08.13

David Cameron has instructed Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy the scenario on the border with Gibraltar is “not acceptable” as the 2 leaders held talks geared toward calming tensions.

No 10 stated that within the “constructive” telephone name Mr Rajoy agreed to lowering measures on the border which have led to prolonged delays for Gibraltarians, however an announcement issued by the Spanish authorities made no reference to any such concession and insisted procedures on the frontier had been proportionate.

Talking after the decision, the Prime Minister stated he was very clear that Britain “will all the time get up for the individuals of Gibraltar”.

His intervention adopted a proper protest by Britain’s ambassador in Madrid over “disproportionate” checks on the border and Spanish threats to levy a cost on automobiles crossing the border and to shut airspace.

The dispute has flared up over allegations of injury to fishing grounds brought on by Gibraltarian authorities following the creation of a man-made reef.
